Hockey Skates

Im 16 and i am completely new to hockey, i used to figure skate. What are some good inexpensive hockey skates for beginners?
also, how long will it take for me to get used to the curved skates? Since i ice skate im used to having a toe pick, and i feel like im going to fall easily with hockey skates?

But to aswer your question, the only way to get used to the skates is to use them. Try going to a local hockey shop and talking to them about the best skate to buy. Everyone's foot is different and you'll have to try them on to find one you like. Ask the people at the shop yours questions and they will be happy to answer you. Try to stay away from buying skates from a department store or large sports store because they are more interested in taking your money then finding you a great pair of skates. I would start out with a Bauer or CCM skate, maybe a RBK unless that is out of your price range. Good Luck Hunting!

anyone tried the vapor xxii's. if so, how are they. I need new skates for high school hockey and i need a decent pair. what about the older bauer 6000 with tuuk ls2 holder/runners? what are some other good choices for new skates

I have 3 hockey players in my house. 1 swears by CCM, 1 is a Bauer guy and the 3rd is wearing Mission.

Just go try them on, see what feels best for you. I think Bauer tends to be a bit wider than CCM and Mission is usually a bit lighter than both. But seriously put them on and buy what feels best. Most important though, don't get sucked into price tags. If you're going to be on the ice for 7-8 hours a day then it's worth it to buy $700 skates. If you're on the ice 7-8 hours a week......not so much.

I don't play hockey or take lessons. I have a pair of hockey skates and I know how to skate backwards but how do you do it fast? I see hockey players skate backwards soooooo fast. When some people(mostly hockey players) skate they start like they are jumping side to side it's hard to explain. HOw do you do that also? Any other tips?

My little brother and I just skate just for fun, no major sports and stuff involved. Our dad said since we skate so much, we might as well save money and get our own skates. I already got mine, but I still need to find a pair for my little brother. He likes hockey skates the best because they're well padded, but we have absolutely no idea what to look for and such. Thank you!

Ask what shoe your brother wears and look at these websites. i can't really help that great bc i am a Figure skater and use figure skates.

Tomorrow I'm going ice skating, and when you rent skates you can choose between figure and hockey skates. I'd rather not have the prongs and such like the figure skates have, so I'm considering the hockey skates. I can skate just fine on figure skates, and I play roller hockey. Would it be difficult for me to learn how to skate on hockey skates, or is it basically the same as figure skates?

You said you can skate just fine on figure skates, so give the hockey skates a try. It'll be fun to try something new and if you're really struggling, just go back to the skate rental counter and swap for figure skates.

I think that, since you can already skate, you'll find it easy to skate in hockey skates. You're not a true beginner - you already have side-to-side balance. Just watch out for the shorter heel on the blade. Keep your weight forward on the skate so that you don't rock off the heel and fall backwards.

Make sure to get the right size and tie the skates tightly so your foot can't slip around. Hockey skates are more difficult to tie properly since they don't have hooks, so take your time.
