Arches hurt like crazy in my ice hockey skates. Help please!?

Hello,
I used to ice skate all the time, but had gotten out of it because the arches of my feet were in terrible pain. I use CCM 552 Tacks (hockey skates) and I lace pretty tight, especially at the bottom. Is this due to improper skate sizes? Will a new arch support or footbed fix this, or do I need a wider skate?
Think I need new supports, or wider skates? Where can I get custom supports at?

all of the above get new supports

if not can anyone suggest any? thanks

I would see if there is a shop near you where you can try some hockey skates on. This is the best way to find out what will be comfortable for you, they are going to fit very different then your figure skates. I am not a personal fan of Graf and those are very low end CCM skates. If you are a decent skater already you will want a better hockey skate.

A decent pair will cost you about $100-150 US. Look for something in that range or a close-out skate that was originally sols with-in that range or above.

CCM tacks................?

Ok, I have a question. I've played hockey for nearly 20 years, and I've had numerous pairs of ice skates. My Bauer Air 90's (best skates I've ever -owned-) are now done with :-( and I need new skates. I've always loved Tacks, and I used my brothers pair when I was younger and they were awesome. I would really like to get a pair, just some regular ones, not the pro tacks (because of the price).

I can't find any good reviews, so does anyone have any useful information about them (or other skates for that matter) ? Any info is greatly appreciated!

All the brands fit differently and models with-in the same brands can fit differently. Also, the way you like your skate to fit may be way different then mine. I would suggest to you that you go to your local shop and try on some skates. See what you like and learn about the technical features.

If you find skates that you like but feel the price is to high, them go home and see what deals you can find online.

Cheap pair of hockey skates?

Im looking to buy a pair of new ice hockey skates for less than $100. So far ive found a lot of different pairs on a few different sites and was just wondering if anyone knew which one of these pairs was the best or better or had any insight on them or had any other suggestions. Well heres what I've found: Nike Flexlite 4, CCM Vector 4.0 '06, Bauer Impact 300, Bauer Vapor VI, and CCM Tacks 492.
So anyone know anything about these skates or know which would be best?

Skate prices are differentiated by the quality of materials, the degree of support and performance like weight-reducing features and benefits. For a $100, you're getting a basic product package. A $200 skate will give you exponentially more bang for your buck, but that will be for you to decide.

The most important consideration in this situation would be your size. If you're 190 lbs or more, any of these products will likely break down on you after minimal use. Keep that in mind when you are determining the intended use of this purchase and your budget cap. Next piece to consider would be your foot morphology. Wide or narrow? Deep arches or flat feet? Prominent ankle bones or not?

Speaking in general terms, Bauer lasts (mold fit) tend to fit narrower feet better, while ccm lasts are more accomodating to wider feet. With all this said, I would recommend either the Bauer Vapor VI or the CCM 492's, depending on the shape of your foot.

Hopefully you'll have a chance to try them on before making a purchase. If you're going through a website, try to make it to a pro shop and at least try on a skate from each brand, regardless of model. This will help you identify your size and fit preferences before commiting to a purchase.

Last point, skate sizes do NOT match shoe sizes. When I played at a fairly competitive level I wore sz 8.5 skates with my sz 11 feet. It was a very snug fit and I have since gone to a sz 9 as my needs have become more recreational. Either way, you'll have to go down at least 1 shoe size to get a proper fit.

When a skate is laced up and your heel is locked in to the back of the skate and you are in a moderate knee bend, your toes should be brushing up against the toe cap. Keep in mind, also, that you won't necessarily wear the same size from brand to brand, much like with sneakers or shoes.

Good luck.

Which Hockey Skates?

Another inquiry about hockey skates. I'm running CCM Pro Tacks 192 right now and want to upgrade.

Now here are my choices:
NikeBauer Supreme 50 $199
NikeBauer Supreme 30 $149
Mission S400 $169
Mission S500 $199
Bauer Vapor XIV $159.99

Which would be the best choice. Between the Nikebauers, the main difference is the 50s are $50 more, have 8 more oz. of padding and has clarino in the boot. Same for the Mission s400 vs. the s500. The s500 has clarino. Is it really worth $50 for clarino in a boot, cause basically thats the only real difference in the skates?

Also as an amateur, will i really be able to tell the difference between either the 30/50s or the s400/s500? What is the better skate overal, Bauers or the Missions?

Also, which sites have the best deals on gear
Aren't NikeBauers basically bauers?

Also I can get a pair of Mission S300s on clearence at my local rink for $120, those any good?

The best choice is to buy the skate that feels the most comfortable. Don't buy a particular skate based on what someone else says - the skates are the most important piece of hockey equipment and you must love the way they feel right out of the box. The skate should feel comfortable the instant that you put it on - without breaking in or heat molding. Every manufacturer has slightly different sizing so you shouldn't buy a skate on name only (unless you're getting an endorsement fee!!!). I've known people who've spent $500 on skates and ended up hating them. BTW, the same thing goes for helmets.

Another Amazing Day Ice Skating on the Fens at Welney Wash 20th December, 2010

Thanks to the passion and dedication of Roger Giles, the family had a great afternoon out on the ice at Welney Wash on Monday 20th December.  All it took was a phone call saying the conditions were good at Welney and we were off in search of fresh ice to skate.

I wonder what happen to the Littleport Challenge Cup and the Littleport Moors Skating Ground.   Are the embankments that created the area still in place or has it be built on or farmed.

I just hope 2011 brings a frosty January and February to match December 2010 !
