I haven't been in the market for new skates in a decade and I'm wondering what some of the best skates that are available these days are. What would you recommend and why?

There is no one brand that is better then their counterparts on the market. All the brands offer top quality high-end skates to basement pond hockey bargains.
When selecting skates first determine the price range you can afford, then buy the BEST fitting pair of skates you can find! Comfort and support are key to skates... ill fitting skates no matter the brand will effect your skating.

i want to get some ice hockey skates and i was wondering what the best skates are? im planning on spending up to £100
Well it all depends on what fits your feet the best. Graf and Bauer have long been at the top. Graf builds quite expensive skates, but they also fit quite well on most people. I have had pairs, and they work well. Some people have said they find them too narrow. Bauer makes a number of different levels of skate. Their top end skate is very expensive, but the lower end models are still quite good. They also fit a variety of foot types. Reebok is the third best of the three. They have only recently started building skates that can compete with Bauer and Graf. CCM is usually mediocre nowadays, and are really just cheaper reeboks. Personally, I would go with bauer. They are my favorite hockey brand. They make high quality equipment in general, especially their newest models. They have the supreme, vapour and flexlite lines, all of which have multiple versions of the same skate, they just cost more or less based on quality. It is also hard to find a graf skate that cheap. The best way to find a good skate is to just try them on until you find one that is comfortable, and doesnt break the bank. But yeah. Bauer, Graf, and Reebok are all high quality companies
I dont know what the best skates are but when I played hockey I used Bauer and I have a 4e high Instep.
I also used to use 2 straps per skate ,I used 1 around the back under the skate not the blade of course and 1 In the front.strap the strap over the top where the laces are,an old pro taught me that.I hope this helps you as it helped me

Get CCM's. I got some for $60 (US) and use them twice a week. They are cheap, comfortable, and work well.
