Usa Hockey

How do you like the chances of the USA Hockey Team in the Quarterfinals of the IIHL Mens Hockey Championships? Paul Statsny had two goals and an assist yesterday in Team USAs 3-0 win against Germany. The U.S. still has one more game againt before Canada before the Quarterfinals start, but it is only for 1st place in the F Divisiob- we've already clinched a Quarterfinal spot. What do you guys think of USA Hockey now!!

Canadians no longer worry about the Russians. They worry about American hockey teams.
American teams seem to be able to adapt to both styles of hockey better than anyone else.
Thats why when team USA plays Canada, it's usually close. Americans are making up more and more of the available draft age players, in fact on a % basis they're increasing more than any other country.
The USA hockey program rivals Canada's now.
By the way, Stasny was born in Canada.

So I've been a USA hockey ref for a year now. I am about to do my first USA hockey highschool level game as a linesman tomorrow.
Is there a different jersey to wear? I know I cant call penalites but what are my designated zones and any other key importancies?

You wear your regular referee shirt without the arm bands.

Your primary responsibilities are off-sides and icings. Icing is the same as a USAH youth game, it's automatic icing and the mechanics work the same as in the two man system. If you are the back official you are determining whether or not the puck was shot from behind the center ice red line. If you are the front official, you are deciding whether anyone had an opportunity to play the puck and whether it went over the goal line.

Off-sides is a bit different in a USAH high school game than a youth game. They play tag-up off-sides so your biggest adjustment will be not shutting the play down as soon as it crosses the line. Raise your arm to signal the off-sides, if everyone clears simply take your arm down. If they touch up or continue to forecheck without making an attempt to clear, blow the play down.

You still have some penalty responsibilities as a liney. You will still shut the play down for too many men. Also, if you witness a major penalty, first get the number of the player then the time of the infraction then go speak to the referee. He may decide not to call it, but you still need to report it to him.

Some other things to remember:
Center Ice Face-offs
- At the beginning of the game the liney at the visitor's end lines up on the bench side of the ice.
- After goals, if the team at your end scores line up on the bench side. If your team gives up a goal, line up on the opposite side.
Miscellaneous
- Always try to be close enough to cover your partner if he gets pushed off of his line.
- It's fine to switch ends for a bit and never switch back until play is established in one of the end zones.
- During the final 10 seconds of each period, if you are on the opposite side of the referee, sprint to the goal line to offer another set of eyes and some presence to prevent altercations.
- Whenever the goaltender at your end of the ice is getting pulled (delayed penalties and at the end of the game) shut the play down if they make a premature substitution.

That's quite a bit to throw at you for your first game as a liney. Hopefully you will have a partner with some experience who will be able to help you out.

all day, you start at about 8 i believe and go till 530 there is a break for lunch and you spend an hour or two on the ice

With the Olympics on the horizon, should USA hockey look in a new direction in terms of a head coach? Peter Laviolette would seem to be a good fit, as would John Tortorella. The bottom line is this: if Ron Wilson is America's only hope for international supremacy, then they are in serious trouble. Who would be a great fit to lead the Americans?

Looking at it from a different angle, I think what team USA should be looking at for a coach is a Don Cherry type of guy.
Maybe if Brett Hull or Jeremy Roenick (sp?) could coach, would generate a lot more interest in US hockey. Right , wrong or indifferent, and usually with little effort given to the thought process (like cme) , they have something to say. will say it loud and often. Due to their character, these 2 would generate more interest than an occasional extra win. In the long run extra interest would generate more players and that would lead to better players.
