At the Ralph Engelstadt Arena where the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux play, there is a number 23 right below the indian head mascot. What does this 23 stand for?
23 is the retired number worn by Ralph Englestad. The rink where they play is also named after him.

Over the past couple years, there has been controversy over the name/logo of the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux logo. UND is one of the most historic NCAA Division 1 Hockey, and this name/logo has been a part of its sucess. But now, people are arguing that its logo and name is not with the times as more awareness to respect of aboriginal tribes is growing.
I disagree with this resolution because the name/logo is a source of pride for the school and the team, and taking it away can take way some of that pride, Also, UND is not trying to be 'racist'. This has been their name/logo for a long while, so I think keeping the name/logo is in the school's best interest
Do you agree?
P.S. Trivia: Which current NBA Coach, who leads the '07 Hall of Hame Class and has won 9 NBA Title Rings, is a former All-American for UND's Basketball Team?

The issue with the UND Fighting Sioux which does not apply to the Ottawa Senators is that the issue has been raised by the N.C.A.A. which oversees college sports. The N.C.A.A. has stated that any school whose logo or nickname can be considered offensive to Native Americans or Native tribes cannot host post-season championships, and any Native American images cannot be displayed on uniforms, including cheerleader uniforms, at any N.C.A.A. championship. Florida State received a waiver because the chief of the Seminole Tribe went to the N.C.A.A. and asked that the school be permitted to retain the nickname as the Tribe feels it honors their heritage. But there is a big difference between a tribal name (Seminoles) and a tribal name combined with a stereotypical adjective (FIGHTING Sioux), which is very offensive in the eyes of many Native Americans. "Fighting Sioux" is akin to the University of Notre Dame changing it's teams' nicknames to the "Drunken Irish" (another stereotypical adjective combined with a nationality). And if The University of Notre Dame Drunken Irish is offensive to a race of people (and it sure as heck is), then so is the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux. The Sioux may have kicked Custer's behind at Little Bighorn, but they were (and are) not primarily warmongers.

Minnesota Gopher Hockey: Weekend Series vs. North Dakota - The ...
Two good buddies of mine (who both happened to be named Josh) went to school at North Dakota State in Fargo, North Dakota. Visiting them on several occasions I learned two things:
1) Fargo was actually an awesome place to go to school. I had never been to Fargo before, so my only knowledge of the place was the movie and that it was cold, flat and windy. After hanging out up there, the latter three things remained true, but it really didn't matter because with three schools- NDSU, Concordia, and Minnesota State-Moorehead- all within just a few miles of each other there was always something going on. Lots of bars and lots of parties full of college kids (all of legal drinking age, of course) meant there was always something to do and see. I got up there a few more times after that, and never had a bad time.
