I don't like the plastic mylec goalie pads? I play in a mens street hockey league. Are intermediate pads safe?
20090901 Saubie checks out his new BMW Sauber travel bag

We use plastic mylec balls, not pucks. I just want to know if it is worth the extra money and if they will last a while. I'm no pro

Which model intermediate pads are you considering?
Although the Mylec pads have minimal padding, the plastic reinforcement will enable them to be much more durable if you're playing on asphalt or concrete.
If you don't mind putting gorilla tape or duct tape to keep them in place I'd recommend TOUR leg pads (check inlinewarehouse.com for either the GTL400 or the other one (don't remember the model) as they have much better protection. Won't be quite as durable though. CCM also makes a descent outdoor pad which shouldn't be more than $150 or thereabouts.
Any synthetic leather pad is a waste of money on outdoor surfaces though and with a Mylec ball you don't need top-notch protection anyway.

what kind of pvc posts would i need?

I have made my own nets I use for roller hockey. It is easy to make with PCV pipes. You may not get the exact dimensions as shown at Dicks, but you'll get it close enough.

I use 1.5 to 2" width to make the whole thing. All the pieces are at your local Lowes, Home Depot, Menards, Home Hardware, etc.

Dry fit the whole thing in the store before purchasing. You'll need a jigsaw to cut the pieces. About an hour to do the whole thing. The hard part will be stringing the net to your liking. I secure mine using cable tie-wraps.

Good luck.

What was your earliest hockey injury?
20090614 Nike Bauer + Itech hockey skate socks

My 14 month old son spends the better part of his day walking around the house with a Mylec floor hockey stick whacking balls, pucks, toys and the dog. Yesterday, he managed to open up his own lip pretty well. After 3 hours of not being able to get the blood to stop, we took him to the ER where the blood promptly stopped in the waiting room!

This got my wife to asking about my first hockey related injury. I was six, playing street hockey with my 16 year old cousin and his friends. I made the goalie look bad, not for the first time, and he cracked me in the nose with his goalie stick breaking it. My grandmother beat the tar out of the kid.

What was your first hockey related trip to the ER and for those of you who have never played the game, what was the earliest injury you recall?
Nips: I have a slew both playing and officiating. I was once took a Marty McSorely like stick to the face, busted nose, fractured orbital, 60+ stitches. Took a slap shot to the eye once. Same diagnosis minus the broken nose.

During an All-star game, I took a small cut under my eye. Cleaned up, headed back out and first shift took a stick to the other eye. Four stitches to each side.

I have a Nike shaped swoosh scar on my forehead from a stick I took reffing. That one was good for about 20 stitches.
I would estimate I have received over 600 stitches over the years.
Jenni: That explains a whole lot!!!
Nips: LITY is the one who should have some real stories. He played in the pre-helmet era.
Jenni: I have a very good plastic surgeon. I am waiting until I decide to hang up the skates for my final clean up.
Mrs. Ferguson: Perhaps I should lay off the taunting a little this week? You sound pretty lethal with a spoon.
AMDD: He handled it like a trooper. With all the blood pouring out of his mouth, all he wanted was the stick back. He even took it to the hospital with him and entertained the staff in the waiting room. He has a fat lip, visited the dentist for the first time today and all is well.
Bob: The difference is that the Kovalchuk hit was worse. This is not the star treatment, it is the Philly treatment. I am as pissed off about this as you are. I don't think that Kovalchuk deserves a super long suspension but this clearly shows that the league has an issue with the Flyers.
Everyone who answered with non-hockey related injuries: I was apparently an injury prone child. I got hurt doing everything. Ran my eye into the corner of a picnic table playing football in a picnic grove. Took a baseball to the face for a broken nose + stitches. The list goes on.
Mrs. Ferguson: You get the money either way no?
Erica: This is new to her. She never visited an ER as a child (she missed out on one of the great experiences of childhood IMO). This is taking some getting used to for her but she is adjusting. She's a nurse and she was still a basket case yesterday. She is a trooper though. I broke a bone in my foot a week before our wedding reffing. I did my bachelor party on crutches. Needless to say she wasn't very happy but did arrange the shots of pain killer for the big day.
Zam: That is an injury that cannot be explained, it must be experienced to fully appreciate the pain. It's a mistake that only gets made once!

** I have your email address, I will be in touch with you when we get our summer plans worked out. I know we are doing at least a few tourneys.
Chris: I think the little guy may have a better chance of becoming the next Dave Schultz given his current antics. The dog is awesome, I feel bad for him sometimes. If I get rough playing with the dog, the dog stands up for itself quite well (playfully, but a bit rough). When the baby does anything to him, he goes totally submissive and just takes it. He's a great dog.
Tom: You just raised an interesting point about society. I can remember getting patched up by coaches, refs, parents, rink guys, anyone with a strong enough stomach. Let someone try the same thing today. And yeah, Pulford managed to stick with the game a few years beyond juniors.

Haha, go Grandma! Okay, I'd like to remind you that I have not talked any smack concerning tomorrow, so your relatives don't need to come beat my door down in the middle of the night. Um, but if they're on their way, should I invite them in for coffee or tea?

I haven't had any hockey-related injuries. I haven't had too many injuries at all, actually. I did the same things my brother and the neighborhood kids did, especially the boys, (I had I-can-do-anything-you-can-do.... -better syndrome) but I had some kind of luck or something.

Before that, I was just this girly little thing that my mom and all female relatives liked to put frilly dresses and bows on. I swear my more feminine stage of childhood made me, well, dumber. I loooved cats. My mom was always telling me to not pet them, but I loved them too much. I was told not to pet this evil cat my grandmother had and it ended up scratching me across the face and scarring my nose. (Scar not present these days.) Another instance I remember was being told not to pet this stray cat that kept coming around where we lived. Sigh.... of course I did though, and my mom, uncle, and the local police had to catch the cat to get it tested for rabies. (Rabies not present these days... just kidding, it didn't have rabies.)

Anyway, the first incident that I would say caused an actual "injury" that I can remember was a bicycle accident when I was about 8-years-old. My brother was playing with a ball with some kids and it skidded out in front of me just as I came flying down the street on my bike. Now, I SHOULD have gone to the hospital, but my mom and the dad of the kids my brother was playing with decided they could do a little "home surgery" to get the rocks out of my knee/shin and get rid of the torn skin hanging off gashes on my leg with a razor and peroxide. I was pretty calm for having a bunch of people around me, staring and wincing.

...But I so got my brother back a few years later. Yes, yes, he accidentally caused my injury and I accidentally caused him the following injury, but karma dictates that these things have to even out, you know, so I'd call it a bit of payback. One day I'm downstairs minding my own business and my brother and his best friend come running down from the 2nd floor, playfully yelling to me, probably trying to get me to come upstairs and play video games or wrestle with them or something. Uh, so I innocently (really!) threw a metal spoon towards them, (innocently!) and it actually stuck in my brother's arm.
