I met a mother whose eleven- or twelve-year-old son was a hockey player, and she matter-of-factly told me he'd suffered four concussions, several ear-drum injuries, and many other injuries, and that coaches sometimes encourage the kids to "take out" good players on opposing teams. How can a mother let a minor child participate in this sort of thing?
As a 15 year old hockey player who has a hockey related broken finger right now, and has suffered a few broken fingers, lost teeth, cuts, and bad bruises, i think fighting in hockey is OK. Hockey is a very emotional sport and is also very physical. When you are in an emotional state and someone is trash talking or taking cheap shots at you, it might get out of hand. Most likely, the majority of the injuries your friends son's injuries probably were not due to fighting. Most people that degrade and oppose the fighting in hockey, have never watched a hockey game in their life. This is why you wont find many hockey fans that are completely against fighting. I hope i helped you to see that parents let their children compete in this game because it is not rooted in fighting. The game just happens to be so emotional and physical that it sometimes turns into a confrontation. I suggest you watch a proffesional hockey game on T.V. and you will see that hockey is a game not based on fighting, also you will see that the fights started most of the time are for a reason.
Kids learn more then just hockey through participation in a youth hockey tournament on Snoopy's Home Ice in Santa Rosa. It's a tough sport ...
on nbc, right before the gold medal hockey game started, a woman did a story about a small town that used hockey to keep the kids from doing drugs. any clue who that anchor was?
It might have been Mary Carillo.

Me and my friend are both 16 year olds and exceptional hockey players and want to run a 5 day hockey camp for younger kids explaining how to shoot, proper stride, turning, some fun stuff like tricks (example crosby pick up and ovechkin slapping the puck out of the air). We believe kids teaching other kids would be funner and help them learn better as sometimes kids are afraid to fail or mess up in front of adults.
Do you think this is a good idea?
Would you put your kids in our camp?
How much would you pay for this camp?
Camps teaching kids any sport basics is always an awesome idea.
Either do a dry run first with no fees or just a minimal amount of fees to cover the ice rental. I'd think if it is a student run camp, I'd put a price of 10-20 dollars on it. If you are both Varsity lettermen with good stats in HS play, that can help you get more kids signing up.
A problem with this though, you have to have backup equipment, extra equipment, ice rental, and full day plans. These can all be fixed by getting your local Parks & Recreation department involved. 5-Days MIGHT be too long as a typical camp can go just over the weekend while pro/college camps can go a full week. Maybe try wintercamp during that second week of Christmas vacation - but with today's age you have to compete with video game christmas gifts and how much they'll be played.
If I had kids interested in hockey, I'd send them to any camp which can teach the core fundamentals and would be a fun experience they'd want to do again. Good luck and I applaud you for thinking of coaching the younger players.
In many ways its not really about just hockey but parents who have kids that play alot of sport.
Here are some:
My hockey son, scored on your honor student daughter. Just kidding here are some more PC ideas.
1. Hockey Mom or Hockey Dad
2. I taught my (son/daughter) a thing or two about going in the corner
3. My child's hockey bag smells worse that your child's
4. This hockey mom can take on any wimpy soccer mom
5. I taught my kid to crawl, walk, ride a bike, and now cross-check
6. My (son/daughter) has never lost a game, (he/she) just ran out of time.
Maybe that will help get your noodle cranking.

These days the game is played in basketball courts, blacktop rinks, tennis courts, playgrounds and yes, even streets. The roller skates of years in the past have advanced into roller blades however the sport is still the same. Children play with hockey sticks to gain objectives against the other team.
