You need padding for hockey! Learn tips for putting on equipment as a goalie in hockey in this free hockey lesson video. Expert: Chris DiRico Bio ...
I want to be an ice hockey goalie but I kinda seem afraid to take on a slapshot going really fast.
It's a mental thing. I often visualize the puck hitting my pads, catcher, blocker, chest arms and even head (actually happened twice today). If you think you are going to get hurt you've lost the battle before you even hit the ice, Get a good warmup if possible, people should be starting off with slower shots and aiming them at your pads, the pick up the pace. Yes I occasionally get a stinger that smarts, the last one was off the top of my left knee despite wearing knee pads, I got up and got on with the gaem. It comes with the position. Only broken bone so far, a pinkie finger. I get a rush when I get smacked with ahard shot and it does not hurt. Goalies are known to be a little off.......

Im just starting hockey and i really want to play hockey, i dont plan on being very serious about hockey, not going anywhere past the house level and going to open hockey with my friends. I wouldnt mind using gear thats used and a few years old because i dont need the top of the line stuff. What should i expect to pay for a set of goalie pads like this?
I can't tell you how much to pay as people will sell you different things for different prices but here's what to look for.
First make sure you know your measurements mainly your at the knee.
http://www.goaliemonkey.com/sizinginfo.h tml
Then figure who you will be playing against, because even in house leagues some guys can shoot the puck.
You'll get what you pay for, spending the extra hundred dollars or so now will save you lots of bruises and aches later on.
Make sure the gear isn't worn down and still have all the pieces and padding where needed.
You don't need to necessarily get the biggest name brand equipment (ie. Bauer, Vaughn, Reebok) but make sure you know of the manufacture and check them out. Some smaller brand but very good equipment is Simmons, GOI, Battram all make good gear at lower prices.
Can I use street hockey goalie equipment to play ice hockey?
No you can't.
Ice hockey uses a heavier, harder object (puck) that is often struck at higher speeds. Street hockey pads are typically plastic or foam of poor quality, that is not gonna last
a long time on the ice and would also be unsafe.
For the past couple summers I've been playing roller hockey with a couple buddies, and more often then not I've found myself playing goalie. I purchased some cheap roller hockey pads, and they got the job done. Currently, I want to make the transition from playing goalie in roller hockey to goalie in ice hockey.
I'm twenty years old and i'm 5'11 180lb. Im thinking I should get "34 pads but I've also heard of goalies my height getting "36 pads, so I don't really know what size to get. I found a pair of pads on ebay, they're TPS R4 and I heard pretty good things from searching the internet but if anyone has any additional input I would love to hear what you guys think.
Is it generally safe to purchase pads online? I need a blocker and a trapper and I was thinking I should get the TPS R4 as well, but Im wondering if I will have any problems with sizes? Or would senior be a safe bet. I also need skates and pants and the chest protector, I mean I guess I need EVERYTHING....
Any goalies have advice on how I should purchase my equipment, sizes, ect.... any input would be appreciated... Thanks in advance for your time
well first the pad size. with you being 5'11" the 34" will fit smaller than the 36" in this age alot of goalies like their pads bigger. I couldnt find any R4's that are sr size but if you found them then you csan give them a shot. although with them being only a sr level pad and not pro level they prolly wont last as long but thats ok because you are just starting. you will need atleast senior level equip.
I would suggest used equip because its usually cheaper and you can find some good quality stuff. but it is pre used.
The things i would buy brand new are; a goalie cup!! ( for obv. reasons lol), under armour (alot of goalies wear the underarmour pants instead of socks. its what i wear) and mad a helmet or a sweat band for the mask.
Here are some sites that u can find used equipment on;

They are both goalie talk sites and basically everyone on them will offer help if you ask for it.
