How do you skate backwards on hockey ice skates?

I don't play hockey or take lessons. I have a pair of hockey skates and I know how to skate backwards but how do you do it fast? I see hockey players skate backwards soooooo fast. When some people(mostly hockey players) skate they start like they are jumping side to side it's hard to explain. HOw do you do that also? Any other tips?

How hard is it to skate on hockey skates?

Tomorrow I'm going ice skating, and when you rent skates you can choose between figure and hockey skates. I'd rather not have the prongs and such like the figure skates have, so I'm considering the hockey skates. I can skate just fine on figure skates, and I play roller hockey. Would it be difficult for me to learn how to skate on hockey skates, or is it basically the same as figure skates?

You said you can skate just fine on figure skates, so give the hockey skates a try. It'll be fun to try something new and if you're really struggling, just go back to the skate rental counter and swap for figure skates.

I think that, since you can already skate, you'll find it easy to skate in hockey skates. You're not a true beginner - you already have side-to-side balance. Just watch out for the shorter heel on the blade. Keep your weight forward on the skate so that you don't rock off the heel and fall backwards.

Make sure to get the right size and tie the skates tightly so your foot can't slip around. Hockey skates are more difficult to tie properly since they don't have hooks, so take your time.

Be sure to report back afterwards, because people like hearing about these experiences.

Have fun!

How often should you sharpen hockey skates if you skate 3 times a week?

I skate 3 times a week playing ice hockey. How often should I have my skates sharpened?

I personally sharpen mine before every game because I like fresh skates, bt if you skate 3 times a week then once a week is good.

How can I learn to skate like a hockey player?

You know stop, and turn, and do that runny thingy on the ice quickly without getting hurt.
I'm an okay skater but, I want to learn how to skate like that it looks so much more fun to be able to do that.
Also just wondering, are hockey skates more comfortable than figure skates?
I should have no problem with finding a school for hockey skating "High school hockey in rhode island is as big as football in Texas"

You can probably take lessons at your local ice rink. I know my local rink has both hockey and figure skating lessons. And just practice a lot. I heard from people who do both ice hockey and figure skating that hockey stops are actually a lot easier than figure skate stops. You can also rent DVDs or check online for video lessons.

I think hockey skates are more comfortable. They tend to be wider and have more cushioning.

What is the best cut for an ice hockey skate?

I'm curious as to what are the benefits of various cuts on ice skates. I've been using the "house cut" at my local rink which is 1/2 inch. But I've heard of other hockey players using 3/8, 5/8, 7/16, etc. How do these cuts affect the way people skate?

The hollow of the blade affects how much you hug your edges and how fast you go. The closer to 1" you get, the shallower the hollow becomes, and the faster you'll skate. The deeper the hollow, the sharper you turn. Some heavier set people prefer a deeper hollow because they find it gives them more stability. It's a personal preference. The only problem with getting a custom cut (aside from just remembering what you like) is that it's different from what the rink's specialty is, so they may or may not set it correctly every time (depending on who's doing your sharpening).

  • Selecting the Right Hockey Skates for Your Situation | Travel Targets

When you're serious about playing hockey, there are few things more important than selecting the perfect skate. You need skates that will help you reach a point of expanding your skills even if you are new to the game of hockey. Remember these tips and you should have no trouble finding the perfect pair of skates for your hockey needs.

You will find many manufacturers with a vast array of models and price ranges to suit your needs. Common sense might indicate that you should buy the best skates you can afford, but this isn't necessarily the case. It is not necessary for the average beginner to get professional skates as these tend to be stiff and uncomfortable not to mention they restrict your movements pretty heavily. You should, therefore, look for skates that are suitable for your current level of experience and ability.
