What digital camera is best for hockey or sports photography in general?

I am just 15, so yeah anything 200 dollars and below would be nice.

the current best sports camera, particularly for indoors, is the Nikon D3. Nikon have a range of very good (read expensive ) lenses to complement the D3 body.

Other DSLRs will do a good job if used properly

How to shoot hockey photographs

This is a teaching video about how to shoot photos of hockey by professional sports photographer Rob Skeoch using the Sony Alpha camera system.

Anyone have any tips for indoor sports photography? (Hockey)?

I have a Nikon D80 digital SLR with a Nikkor 80-200mm F2.8 lens. Any advice for camera settings and such to get some good quality indoor Hockey shots?

Well lets look at the old FotoSharp (fotosharp.com) "Day & Night Exposure Guide" and see what it suggests. Looking at Scene # 8: Indoor sports, circus - floodlit we find:

Using ISO 3200

f2.8 @ 1/500
f4 @ 1/250
f5.6 @ 1/125

Using ISO 1600

f2.8 @ 1/250
f4 @ 1/125
f5.6 @ 1/60

Using ISO 800

f2.8 @ 1/125
f4 @ 1/60
f5.6 @ 1/30

The question now is this: Is your 2.8 lens a "constant aperture" from 80mm to 200mm or is there a second f-stop associated with the 200mm length? If so, you'll have to be guided by it in choosing your ISO. If its a 2.8 from 80-200mm then you should be able to do fairly well at ISO 1600. Just turn on the Noise Reduction and have at it.

Note: Your actual conditions may vary so I'd suggest shooting in Shutter Priority and watching what f-stop the camera selects. Of course you could always just go to ISO 3200.

Photography at hockey games?

Well I got a Nikon D80, been experimenting with diffrent modes, using flash but standing high in the bleachers, using a lens 70-300m. So my question is why are my pictures either yellow or blue? and how can I take better pictures at indoor civic arenas?

Your flash from high in the bleachers isn't powerful enough to light anything up. All it's doing is forcing the camera to use a daylight WB.

And that's conflicting with the indoor lights, which aren't daylight white balanced.

So: 1) stop using the flash. Shoot available light.
2) Custom White Balance or
3) Shoot RAW and fix the white balance in post processing
4) Auto WB might work if you give it a chance; just don't use the flash (which turns off auto WB in favor of flash WB).

How much my hockey cards are worth?

I have a huge collection of hockey cards, but I have this not open: The Original 6 Premium Hockey Card Series. It features action and portait Shots, vintage photography, and limited Bobby Hull Hologram inside.
It's still wrap, never been open.

i think a bobyorr hologram card is worth like $100-150 but the older the cards get the more they are worth

Digital camera + ice hockey?

What's the best digital camera for ice hockey photography? If I were to go for a DSLR, I've considered saving up for a Nikon D40.

But I would like to stick with an inexpensive digital camera that takes good quality photographs, if that can be done. Any suggestions?

I'd prefer answers from people who have taken photographs at ice hockey games. Please and thank you. :)

The only problem with a inexpensive camera can be the shutter speed... You will need a fast shutter speed to catch action shots.
I have a Canon Rebel XTI, it is pretty fast, not quite as fast as a 35mm, but I can get some great action shots easily.

  • Mastering the Art of Sports Photography With your Digital Camera ...

For sports enthusiasts, there’s nothing more exciting than sports people playing their favourite game. The sight of the field, rink or golf course initiates the thrill and anticipation. This, combined with digital photography, can provide some amazing photographic opportunities. However it’s not a matter of point the camera at the person diving for the ball or puck and snapping away. It’s a lot more complicated than that.

In digital photography sports can be quite challenging. The sports people do not present an easy task of being photographed because of the amount of high movement. However, you can indeed achieve great sports digital photography. Most excellent sports digital photography requires good planning and execution.
