Hockey Ice

My 7 yr old is learning to ice skate just so he can use it recreationally. I am having a hard time finding figure skates for him. Is it okay to learn on hockey skates? We don't plan on playing hockey. I've heard that once you use hockey skates it's hard to go back to figure skates. Any tips or advise will be appreciated.

I wouldn't suggest getting him hockey skates. Hockey skates have a different blade and structure. They don't have a toe pick so when he does get figure skates it will be hard for him to get used to them, he'd probably be tripping over the toe pick a lot. I also think the blades are thinner. My little brother would always use figure skates to go ice skating and then one time he had to use hockey skates and he said it was a lot harder to balance because the blade was thinner. Hockey skates are made for hockey so i wouldn't suggest using them for figure skating. If your trying to find them at your pro shop it's going to be hard because they don't sell a lot there. I went there one time looking for figure skates and all they had was some cheap ones and hockey skates. Get his feet measured and look online for figure skates.

Is it ALL just hockey with a hockey stick, only one uses roller skates, one uses ice skates & one is on the ground, on a field? And what's the difference between these sports & lacrosse?

Also, would anyone know where an 8 year old girl can play any of these sports (particularly field hockey or lacrosse) in Suffolk County, New York?

the differences are that with ice hockey, you are obviously on the ice and you wear a helmet. Also; you have a different shaped stick. Field hockey is on the field/astro turf, you don't need a helmet, but a gumsheild/mouthguard, and the stick is again different. Roller hockey is on roller blades/skates and played with a stick nearer the shape of ice hockey than field.
The field hockey stick is more curved at the end and has a smaller end. Also; ice hockey is played with a puck, whereas field hockey is played with a ball.

I bought a pair of hockey ice skates, but I need to know is how to loosen them up so I could tighten them up.

Take them to a pro and have them baked. They put them in a special machine that "bakes" them and you wear them in the store and they form to your foot. Trust me it works. Also while you are there get the blade profiled. If the sharpener is a pro you will skate better than you ever have and be able to go into corners much faster. Good luck.

I am writing a story and my characters (a teenage boy who is 17 and a teenage girl who is 17) both play high school ice hockey. The story is set in Minnesota at a high school where the main sport is ice hockey. I need to know when it starts and how long it goes for and when it ends. I really don't know a lot about ice hockey and so any other information will be good. I've played field hockey and so know how to play and the positions if they are the same. Thanks.

I am too late to join ice hockey team? I have basics in ice skate but not so good. I seldom went to the ice rinks because of my studies.

Yes, you are too late to start If you want to become a pro. As for your skating ability... not looking so good. But that's why you have coaches!
The equipment isn't that expensive... the price varies where you are.
