I want to make an ice cream cake for my son's 2nd birthday party. Any ideas out there on how do make something cute? I don't have time to run to specialty cake stores please.....
make the cake out in a sheet pan then round out the edges like a hockey rink and ice the blue lines, red lines and goalie lines on the cake, try to find something to use for nets, 1 at each end, and maybe line the edging with something to resemble the plexiglass that surrounds a hockey rink. Maybe you could somehow make a couple of hockey sticks and then use chocolate m & m's for the hockey puck.
My most recent creation was this hockey rink cake requested by my friend's 8 year old son. Not being a hockey fan I was a little concerned ...

Dark chocolate icing
Decorator gels and other accessories
Round cake pans
Start your cake with a round nine inch pan. For a double layer cake, use two nine inch pans.
Bake the cake according to package directions and cool it completely. Prepare your cake stand or presentation tray while the cake cools. Make edible hockey stick decorations for the tray with pirouette cookies and Vienna fingers.
Ice your hockey puck cake with dark chocolate icing and make it as smooth as possible. Choose a complimentary cream filling if making a layered cake or use the dark chocolate for icing and filling.
Decorate the cake with your favorite team's logo using colored gel icing. For a simpler design, use white and black gels and draw the NHL shield.
Finish the puck cake with hockey stick candles, team logo picks or edible team logo transfers.
Ideal for birthday parties or game day.

My fiance is a big fan of the friday the 13th movies and i want to make him a 3-D Jason Voorhees hockey mask cake for his 30th birthday. I have a pan that would be perfect 2 do the shape of the hockey mask the only thing I'm going to have trouble with is trying to make the mask look dirty and beat up looking. Any ideas? And what is the best way to get the buttercream icing smooth as I am not a professional I don't have all the tools required.
I dunno, but instead of a knife, if you could finde a machete (even a fake one) for him to cut the cake with, I bet he'd find that funny.
