I'm going to college next fall, and I want to go to a school with a good ice hockey team (I'm absolutely obssessed). I live near Philly and I don't want to go too far away. Does anyone know of any colleges somewhat close to Philly that have good hockey teams?
Boston College is fantastic.
Maine is good.
OSU has an ok team.
Michigan usually puts something pretty good together.
Wisconson normally has a really good team.
MSU is good.
Notre Dame isnt good, the dont even have a real rink.
ummm pretty much if it is a well known school and D-1 there good at hockey.
my top 10 favorite college hockey goals, from the past and present. www.youtube.com
do any college hockey teams have tryouts for people who weren't recruited and didn't play in high school?
thanks for the replies, what about lesser known div 2 or 3 colleges?
It is possible but very unlikely would one get a chance to play, unless you are very good and can impress the coaches/organization...etc,
Division 3 you would have a greater possibility of making the team, since well, it is D-3.
And since there is no division 2, i don't see that happening.
But to answer your question, yes most schools that i know about do have walk on try outs. But if you didn't play in high school, they may not even consider you.
Most of the players that do get the chance to play were recruited from AA, AAA, juniors, or some other form of team/league, AFTER high school, or someone that was a very impressive player in high school, all of whom are there on some kind of athletic scholarship.
Anything is possible if you put your mind to it and have the heart to dedicate your life to hockey, AND of course keeping your grades up, all colleges have academic standards that athletes must follow. Players that do not meet the requirements academically lose there scholarship, and get released from the team.
There are many schools such as private colleges that have teams even lower than D-3, schools that aren't in the NCAA, they play in regional divisions, i know of one in the midwest, with teams in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and of course my home state of Michigan.
Hopefully this small novel that i wrote will help you in someway...
So by all means try out and try your hardest, it can happen....
Good luck.
What was the waster bottle game in college hockey?
Wisconsin vs North Dakota in 1982 I believe. As a UND player was skating past the UW bench one of the Badgers soaked him with a water bottle. the UND player (carey Eades) ran into the UW bench with both fists flailing. An all out brawl ensued.
My favorite sport is hockey and I really love it, but I've only started to get into college hockey just recently. I was wondering if you guys could please tell me some big rivalries between college hockey teams, specifically the Boston University Terriers and the Providence College Friars. Thanks in advance to those of you who answer!
BU vs BC (Battle of Comm Ave) and BU vs Northeastern (both in the Fenway neighborhood)
UNH vs Maine
Harvard vs Cornell
Michigan vs Michigan St.
Michigan vs Ohio State
Denver vs Colorado College
UND vs Minnesota
Minnesota vs Wisconsin
St.Lawrence vs Clarkson
Niagara vs Canisius
Colagte vs Cornell
Miami (OH) vs. Ohio State
BU vs BC vs Northeastern Vs Harvard in the Beanpot
PC doesn't really have a natural rival, maybe Brown, Notre Dame or Holy Cross in inter-conference... in HE it would prolly be BC... but its been kinda lopsided for years. They get up to play the other Catholic Schools tho.
I want to know like a percentage of college hockey players that make it to the NHL, anybody know?
Minimal. Have a back up plan... unless of course you are Canadian... or Russian!

College Hockey News: North Dakota Learns Lessons in Friday Loss
With seven straight wins and an 8-0-1 record in its last nine games, North Dakota has dished out some lessons in sound hockey in moving into first place in the WCHA race and second in the national rankings.
Friday, the Sioux learned a valuable lesson in seeing the streaks end against their biggest rival. The Minnesota Gophers built a 2-0 lead after one period and hung on to beat the Sioux 3-2 in front a sellout of 11,844 at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
"I thought the difference was the first 20 minutes,'' UND coach Dave Hakstol said. "We gave up a 2-0 lead and we never did play the type of game we wanted in the first period.''
It proved to be a costly lesson for Sioux. Mike Hoeffel converted a rare offensive faceoff win by Minnesota with his blast from the top of the faceoff circle to put the Gophers on top 1-0 at 11:22 of the first period.
