is Junior Hockey in canada as big as College football in the US?

for instance i have no idea who is in the draft for the NHL untill a few days before and even then i only know a few people. but for the NFL draft i know who everyone is for the first 3 rounds. so in canada is Junior hockey followed as much as College football in the U.S?

Junior hockey is NOT followed anywhere near as much as College Football in the USA.

Hell, the NHL isn't followed as much in Canada as College Football is in the USA.

The NCAA television contract for one year, is greater than the NHL's North American television contracts in the last 10 years.

The share of televisions tuned into NCAA football in the US is 15%. The share of televisions in Canada tuned to Major Junior Hockey...0.8% (The NHL does have a 17.3% share in Canada). According to a spokesperson at Rogers Cable, the number of Canadians watching US College Football is hundreds of thousands (the average television audience for a Canadian Junior Game is less than 50,000 - on par with the LPGA)

College Football is huge business in the United States (Go to Vegas on a Saturday morning!). Comparing Canada's love of junior hockey, or even the NHL is truly laughable.

Now, there is a week every December where Junior Hockey is king...................................

Do you think John Tavares of Team Canada-Junior Hockey will be one the biggest stars in the coming NHL draft?

His amazing performance in the recent exibition game against Slovakia has made him the talk of hockey town.

Where have you been the last three years?

John Tavares took the NHL to court last year for the right to be drafted in the 2008 draft (he was too young by 5 days).

Tavares has been pegged as the first overall draft in the 2009 draft since 2005. He was granted exceptional status which allowed him to join the OHL at 15 years of age.

He's been the talk of the hockey world since 2006.

As for the game against Slovakia, most NHL scouts are still very disappointed in his skating. He still ranks behind Sweden's Victor Hedman on a lot of team lists (and Brent Sutter of New Jersey isn't impressed with him at all).

His point totals in the OHL have NOT set the world on fire. he has never averaged more than 2 points a game in the OHL (something that Patrick Kane did as an OHL rookie 2 years ago averaging 2.5 points a game). Taylor Hall and Cory Hodgson are both averaging more points/game this year in the OHL than Tavares

There's a lot to like about Tavares, but there's a lot of room to improve. He's a very good player, but not a great player. You need to wipe out your competition to be considered great. I'm still waiting for him to wipe them out.

Where does Canada's Junior Hockey loss to America rank in the worst moments in Canada history?

Its bad enough to see Americans playing our sport but to lose to the them is another.
There is no God when Americans are allowed to steal our championship on our home ice.
We are supposed to own those devils in red white and blue and now my Country feels less superior now.

We better win Gold in Vancouver!
Now I know how the Russians felt in 1980.

Pretty devastating, I think. Apocalypse is upon us when Canada doesn't win the gold in hockey. I wonder what you will say when some other blasphemous team besides Canada wins the gold in Vancouver.

Who's watching the US/Canada World Junior hockey game?

:D Canada currently in the lead at 1-0.

I'm watching Canada DOMINATE the US..

What's your opinion of the World Junior Championships Gold Medal Hockey Game between USA and Canada?

It was a thrilling game. USA beat Canada 6-5 in OT. What implications if any, will Canada's loss have for the future of hockey in Canada?

Not one iota...look at the talent that Canada was unable to get on the roster because the players were playing for their NHL clubs (Stamkos, Schenn, Tavares, Duchene, Kane, etc.).

We (Canada) still have a boatload of talent in the pipeline. The key is to keep identifying and turning out great players.

Look at Canada's record over the last decade (the WJC)...it's an impressive body of work.

Fair play to the Americans; they won the game and clearly they have some guys who can play.

  • Capital District Selects: Jr. A squad rallies behind Robbins ...

“Brian is playing outstanding,” said Selects general manager and Jr. A head coach Jim Salfi of his All-Star goalie from Scotrun, Pa. “He put on an unbelievable show against the Boston Jr. Bruins [on Jan. 16, 56 saves on 60 shots]. I couldn’t believe the saves he was making, some which were point-blank. We were in that game to the end only because of him.”

Salfi still finds it hard to believe that Robbins hasn’t been given the opportunity to choose his Division 1 college destination. Last year, Robbins finished with a .920 save percentage after making 1,352 saves (leading the league in that category in 2009-10 as well). As you can figure out by now, the Selects have had a young, inexperienced defense corps for two years in a row.
