Bantam Hockey

In USA Hockey, is the Bantam age group automatic offsides or is it delayed? Is there a place that has a table saying what each age group's rules are? Such as checking, offsides, and the likes?

The Grand Rapids Griffins Bantam AA hockey team bring the U14 Tier II National Title back to Michigan by winning 3-1 over LA Hockey.

I am pretty good at hockey and i have been told by my coaches and other teams coaches and even the Rink manager that i should be playing AA or AAA travel hockey. My dad wont even look into it because he thinks its way to expensive. Can someone please tell me how much travel hockey is per season.

It depends how far you travel, and to how many tournament games. My son played goal for Bantam AA in Fort Frances Ont, and we had a coach who liked to travel. We went to 8 tournaments, some of which were 10 to 12 hour bus rides (Sault St. Marie and Brandon) being far away the weekend tournaments turned into 4 and 5 day weekends. Figure $100 per night in a hotel, gas money when you don't ride a bus, eating at restaurants daily, tournament fees (about $600 per tourny split amoungst whole team) Our season was 73 games total (we won 68) and I spent about $ 4500 Cdn (this includes 2 tournamnets in the U.S- where you also need a passport-$70)

Do you think that it is unfair to cut a boy, saying he's too small/not big enough, yet the coach keeps a smaller player who he's a good friend with the dad for a AAA team in Rochester? Politics shouldn't have anything to do with making a hockey team. It's ridiculous.

Sorry, and I really mean that. Politics and minor hockey are always a big issue. I am a coach and a ref and after 3 games today, the balance between good and big is a real challenge.

I hope your son and you can deal with it. The child will NOT end up playing hockey for a living. Accept the life lesson, encourage him to do well in school and accept that hockey is a recreational activity, not a career.

- Buy a ball from a hockey store with random sides, throw it against walls; it will come back in random directions (good for hand-eye)
- Up and down from your knees to feet repetitively.
- Sideways jumps one foot at a time (long as you can jump horizontally)
