i know how to do it and all, but when is a good time to start it? i live in buffalo, and lately its been mid 30s-mid 40s.
This depends on how elaborate you want to build the rink. If you wish to keep it simple (basic boards, no fence) then
usually beginning of December is a good time to start building the rink when temperatures hover around the freezing point. If you plan on building 3feet boards with a fence on top, then November is better. You should lay down your liner no later that the beginning of December.
You should wait before flooding until you are sure that temperatures are going to remain consistently below the freezing point. Otherwise you will have a nice pond in you back yard.

k i have a basketball court in my backyard and i was wondering how i could make it into a hockey rink... could i just use snow as the boards and stuff or do i have to get wood for the boards. if there is any snow on the court from before should i shovel it off before i put the water on it or should i leave it there? HELLP
thanks in advance 15 pointssss
do i need a tarp or will it work with the cement?
First you shovel out all the snow and pack it around the sides for boards. Then you add the water. Add the water only if the forcast calls for a few straight days of good cold temps. to ensure solid ice throughout.
I'm wondering if i can make my backyard into a skating rink my backyard is square it has some grass and rock sticking up but i can pull out the rocks and cut the grass but is it possible to make my backyard into a skating rink for practice and what supplies do i need
i live in toronto the winter are cold a nuff
First of all, it must be cold enough for the water to turn into ice. If your winters are cold enough for the rink to remain frozen solid for at least a month then you are hot to go. It won't be worth your time if it doesn't stay cold long enough for the rink to stay frozen or if your rinks keeps thawing and refreezing. If temperature is a problem, you can get a refrigeration unit with piping underneath the ice the keep it frozen, but this will get extremely expensive.
Second, you will need a very long and wide sheet of plastic sheeting. You must last this down on top of your grass to keep the water from being absorbed into the earth. If the plastic is not there, only the top layer of the ice will freeze, but all the water underneath this will be drained away into the soil. Thus, lay down plastic sheeting for however big you want your rink to be.
Third, you need to flood the rink with water. The best way to do this is thin layers of water each time. This will ensure the water freezes all the way through. If you put a lot of water on at once, it will take a veeery long time it all to freeze. Another thing to take into consideration when flooding your rink is the weather conditions. It is best to flood it when there is little wind so that your ice surface freezes nice in smooth. If it is windy out when the water is freezing, the surface will be very choppy.
Fourth, if you are really serious about this rink, you can put up boards. Side boards aren't quite as important, but end boards will stop any pucks that miss the net. Trust me, it's a real pain in the ass to hunt for pucks that were misfired.
Fifth... maintenance. As you play on your rink, you will need to re-flood the ice with water every once in a while to fill the grooves made from skating on it. Also, if it snows, you'll have to clear the ice.
I hope this helps you out and I wish you good luck with your rink dreams!

US Pond Hockey Championship Rules Video « Backyard-Hockey.com
With many of us donning long undies and heading out to pond hockey tournaments in the coming weeks, it makes sense to take a look at what you can and cannot do during a pond hockey game. While it’s important to note that this is the official rules video of the US Pond Hockey Championships on Lake Nokomis in Minnesota, it’s a pretty safe bet that these rules are common among a majority of pond hockey tournaments. So even if your tournament rules differ slightly, it’s worth a viewing. The spirit of competition exists at all events, but there is a line between competing hard and being the team that doesn’t get invited back . Heed Mr. Haberman’s advice and ensure you’re on the right side of that line.
