What is the magnitude of the upset for the 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team over the Soviets?

Is that like a college football team beating the 2007-2008 New England Patriots in a football tournament?
Ok but is it comparable to a college team beating the 2007-2008 Patriots on the center stage?

Simply put, it is the greatest upset in the history of USA sports. When you factor in the political aspect of the era, this victory was more than just a competitive match between 2 counties. It was largely viewed ( at the time) as a victory over communism.

Does anyone have the roster lines for that team? Also, who started for the US?

I don't know the complete lines but the core players were Mark Pavelich, Ken Morrow, Neal Broten, Dave Christian,Mark Johnson and Mike Ramsey.

Who was the captain of the 1980 US Olympic hockey team?

Clue: He scored the game winning goal against Russia.

Mike Eruzione was the captain - Herb Brooks was the coach.

They made a film about it called Miracle (2004)

What was the reason "Miracle on ice" 1980 US Olympic hockey team winning against Russia during the cold war ?

I mean why was it so important during the Cold War? Other then it instilled a sense of Nationalism

the US team consisted of unknown amateur players, the Russian team consisted of a winning bunch of professionals.

b4 the game the US was given 0% chance of winning.

it was the true David and Goliath story.

Patrick - Bill Army was never considered based on an interview I did with Herb Brooks in November 1998. He said the only person considered not in the yearbook was Joe Mullen, but Joe signed a contract with the Blues in August 1979 which meant he was ineligible. The players in the AHL/CHL/IHL were under minor league contracts and not NHL contracts
