It would've made cash!

Which was a more memorable sporting miracle; The 1980 Olympic Hockey Team or Kerri Strugs 1996 Vault Event?

Just wanted to know which of these two famous event is more recognizable, memorable, and/or important; When the United States hockey team defeated the USSR in one of the greatest sporting upsets of all time in the 1980 Winter Olympic Games, also known as The Miracle on Ice, or Kerri Strugs landing her vault one footed to win the gold medal for the USA at the 1996 Summer Olympics after badly injuring her left ankle?

great choices since I also considered these events as not only one but THE greatest moments in Olympic history. but if i'm going to choose one of these, I will choose the Miracle on Ice simply because it took 6 players in the ice rink to beat the highly favored Soviet Union team. In other words, it was TEAMWORK at its best for the US team in order to defeat the best international hockey team in the world at that time.

1980 hockey?
The Boy Next Door

how exactly did the US 1980 hockey team beat the soviets? they should have lost by 10 goals!! it's not like they were more of a team or had worked harder. How did the US win? the USSR had the best goalie in the world, the best center, the best coach and were undefeated in the Olympics since the 64. so how did they do it?

This is the best example I can think of a group of people wanting something so bad, and doing everything they can to make it happen.

On a side note..........the 1980 US Olympic team has the highest percentage of players (13/20) who went on to play in the NHL of any Olympic hockey squad prior to 1998.

That alone says somethintg about how truly amazing that American team was. When taking into account the NHL careers that Kenneth Morrow, Neal Broten, Michael Ramsey, Mark Johnson and David Christian had, the miracle may not have been as much as miracle as we have been led to believe.because when it comes right down to it, from top to bottom, that is one of the best assembled teams anytime anywhere!

I know all of the players on the 1980 usa hockey team but does anyone know what lines they're all on?

I've been looking everywhere for a depth chart for this team and here's what I got from the movie miracle
Line 1
Johnson-Silk-Maclanahan
Line 2, 3 or 4
Pavelich, Harrington, and Schneider
Defense Pair 1
Ramsey, Morrow?

the miracle on ice was literally, a miracle

even whatshisname, the captain, said that in 1000 games, they should never have won

What is the magnitude of the upset for the 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team over the Soviets?

Is that like a college football team beating the 2007-2008 New England Patriots in a football tournament?
Ok but is it comparable to a college team beating the 2007-2008 Patriots on the center stage?

Simply put, it is the greatest upset in the history of USA sports. When you factor in the political aspect of the era, this victory was more than just a competitive match between 2 counties. It was largely viewed ( at the time) as a victory over communism.

  • Sticks at sixty - Gazettelive - Remember When

Reg Bellerby contacted Remember When before Christmas because he was organizing a re-union for Marton Furness Hockey Club and wanted to contact former members and players through the Evening Gazette. Because it was such an important anniversary we asked Reg to write a short history of this well established club, which we thought would interest our readers.

    Reg writes:

Marton Furness Hockey Club is playing it's 60th season and over the years it has had an interesting history. The Club started in 1951 as a section of the Furness Shipbuilding Company's athletic Club. The Hockey team stayed until 1967, all the home games were played on excellent pitches at the Athletics Club ground at Marlborough Road, Haverton Hill, now long disappeared in the name of progress as the bulldozer moved in.
