i have always washed my hockey gear in the washer but recently it's been ripping my hockey pants.
What else can i do beside putting it into the washer?
Take it to one of those machines they have in some rinks and it cleans it for you.
Ice hockey equipment can cost up to 1500 dollars for the advanced player. Find out what basic ice hockey equipment to buy in this free video on ...
I've already bought some stuff, and i'll just list them. Let me know what else I should/need to buy. Thanks.
Composite Stick
skates
gloves
elbow pads
shin pads and tape
hockey pants
inline pant girdle
upper padded shirt
helmet w/ cage
do i need a jock short? anything else?
You need to wear (well, you "should" wear) a protective cup. You can wear the jock short type (just leave the velcro tabs closed), or wear a standalone cup.
The other option is the compression short/cup route; Under Armour makes a great hockey-specific one.
Not sure about the compositite stick; you can probably just use a fibreglass/wood stick (more durable).
For pants- I'd just get the roller hockey "cooperall" type. Much more functional.
I'd also consider a mouthguard. While full facial protection from a cage is great, it does not protect your teeth from a jarring hit.
I'm assuming your team has a set of jerseys. Regular ice hockey jerseys work fine (I played inline a few summers ago; we just bought solid colour blanks and got numbers).

I'm the field hockey goalie at my high school and my gear (shin guards, pads, pants, etc) always smells soooo bad. I wash my gear in the washing machine every once-in-a-while but i can't take it home every day!
I was just looking for a fast and easy solution to smelly gear. Mostly a solution to smelly shin guards.
Thank you so much!!
If you don't want to take your gear home all the time, a good way to keep your stuff from getting stinky at school is to use Febreze, or any other fabric freshening spray. It leaves a nice scent, and kills the germs that cause the smell.
Also, before playing you should put baby powder on the inside of the shin guards. It helps soak up sweat, so the less sweat that gets on your shin pads, the less they're going to smell.
By waiting once in a while to wash your pads, the smell and germs just accumulate and get worse (especially if they're left in a locker). If you wipe them with disinfecting wipes (something like Clorox or Mr. Clean) after every time you finish playing, you kill the germs and most of the stink right away and stop them from lingering in your pads and building up.
You could also spray your locker (with or without the gear in it) with Lysol or Oust. And make sure you air your stuff out before you put it away!! Just leave it on the floor of the locker room or on a bench.

I was wondering where I could find hockey gear for toddlers (age 3 specifically). My son has just started skating and lucky for us he fits into junior skates. I really want to find him hockey pants (long, not the girdles) so that his knees are protected. I have looked on some sites but the junior sizes seem to be a bit too large.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.
Thanks. Yes, I did forget a very important piece of info.
I live in PA, near King of Prussia. Not sure if that helps.
I do have some shin/knee guards that were given to us but he complains about them (they fit a bit strangely). I was just hoping to find the pants and protection all in one. If all else fails I will do what you suggested and try to work with the shin guards.
Head over to The Hockey Shed in Havertown. It is on Brookline Blvd, about a block away from the Skatium and less than a half hour from where you live. Ask for Max or Ronnie. Max is the owner and Ronnie is his son. I have been doing business with them for decades, they will give you straight answers, put your son in the proper fitting equipment he needs and have a good selection of equipment in those sizes in stock. I just bought my 2 year old his first skates and helmet there for Christmas and I make all of my major purchases there. They are also one of only 2 places in this area that I will allow to sharpen my skates.
EDIT: I will not post my full name here on the site but if you mention my screen name, they will likely know who recommend the store. They have done the sweaters for the Lubers for years.
EDIT: I am not a big fan of those one piece equipment suits. People are built differently, short torso plus long legs, short legs, long torso, etc. You will find better fit buying individual pieces of equipment which in turn leads to better protection. Brand A shin pads and pants may be a good fit for one person. Brand A shin pads and Brand B pants will be a better fit for another.
I'm starting to play hockey and I'm looking for some cheap, but decent gear, not top of the line stuff.
I'm set on buying some Bauer X20's or X30's to start improving my skating, and now I'm looking for the rest of the gear to purchase slowly so I have time to save up for it.
I'll need:
-Pads
-Shorts/ Hockey Pants
-Shin Guards/ Knee Guards
-Helmet
-Stick
-Undergarments
Thanks!!
If you are looking for new gear it is going to cost you. Hockey is the best sport ever...sadly that seems to come at a price. You may find some stuff on Ebay but it will be hit or miss and they tend to not have the best deals on hockey gear. A couple of the stores around me will have second hand, lightly used equipment that they are willing to sell. Trick is they do not advertise that they sell used gear (since they want to try to see the new stuff first). I would ask if they have any used and demo equipment that they are willing to sell at a discount. Usually they will have something for you and it normally is good stuff and in good shape.

The Right Ice Hockey Gear Will Make You the Right Man For the Job ...
If you have a son or a daughter that wants to get involved in playing ice hockey, or even if you want to play, you may not know where to begin. Well, the first thing you are going to need is to get the right equipment to get started. So, here is some of the essential equipment that you’re going to need if you’re going to get out there and play on ice.
Skates – Of course one of the essential pieces of ice hockey equipment that you’ll need is good skates. After all, without them you’ll have a hard time playing. When you’re choosing your skates, quality is going to be important. Also, make sure that they are well sharpened before you take them out on the ice for the first time. Usually it’s a good rule of thumb to purchase skates that are a bit smaller than the shoe size you normally wear.
