It's a better choice than a climbing helmet, but still not the best. The big difference is that ski helmets are designed primarily as a shock absorber for head-to-object impacts. Hockey helmets are primarily designed to deflect pucks and protect against vertical objects, such as the glass. While a hockey helmet will take the impact of the head to the ice, it doesn't offer as much protection as a snowsports helmet.

Additionally, a hockey helmet is usually not insulated so a hat or something underneath may be necessary to stay warm. This may affect how the helmet fits, thus making it even less of a good choice. Furthermore, a hockey helmet, in general, fits much looser than a ski helmet. Having seen many come off simply through normal play on the ice, suggests that in a high speed impact on skis, a hockey helmet very well come off, thus negating any protection at all.

While I ski with one now almost all the time, I rarely used one for my first 12 years of skiing. If you stay in control and ski safely, there is no need to rush out and buy a helmet. Additionally, most resorts now rent them for $5-$10 a day.

Is it possible for a hockey helmet to also be able to be used for skateboarding?

Yes. You could. It's actually a little better. You get a screen to protect your face from falling on the ground. It might get a little annoying here and there but it would work great!!!

You can do a lot of better things with hockey stuff while skateboarding, but it might fell weird. If you wear the shin gaurds, the shoulder pads, the elbow pads and helmet, then you could be so good and just go down a couple of pads until you have none! You could go fearless.

I was just wondering if you could use a roller hockey helmet for ice hockey if your cage is upgraded....im not sure and confused....and if you have one that I can buy for cheap it would be helpfull. I am just starting out as a goal tender and I dont want to spend a ton in case im not good or dont like it....well hope you can help.....

Directly from the USA Hockey In-line rule book.

It is mandatory for all goalkeepers to wear a helmet designed for hockey with the helmet strap properly fastened and full face mask designed for hockey with a chin cup. It is mandatory that all goalkeepers participating in the High School age group division and below, and for goalkeepers under the age of 18 playing in the Adult age division, to wear an H.E.C.C. approved helmet with the helmet strap properly fastened and an H.E.C.C approved full face mask.

sorry for being so anal about the rule but I am an in-line hockey ref, and from personal experience, I have seen to many kids and adults get hurt because of improper equipment....besides if you going to be a goalie, you better have the best equipment . Those pucks hurt!
