is there special hockey helmets made for kids with over the ear hearing aids?



I don't think so, but it would be more comfortable without the ear cover. Even if the kid gets any kind of impact in the ear, it's going to hurt. Might as well give the aid some kind of flexibility so that it doesn't jam itself deeper into the canal.

I think it's Steve Downie who has a hearing problem and he doesn't even wear one when he plays. He relies mostly on visual cues.

Question re helmet for kids taking ice skating lessons,is bike helmet sufficient?

I have young kids (7 and 9) who have taken ice skating lessons before. They will probably take them again this summer. Previously they wore bike helmets but I wonder about the protection level offered by them. I'm most concerned with avoiding an injury from falling backwards.

Have you had much experience with this? Is it best to get a hockey helmet? I think they have some sort of cage in the front which might be kind of distracting but they probably would offer better protection to the back of the head.

Do they have special ice-skating helmets even?

I'm interested in your opinions and experiences. Thanks in advance for your help.


I'd go with a hockey helmet - they are specifically designed for falling on ice while skating.

But once your kids have had a bunch of lessons and improved, you'll have to take the helmets off (I'm presuming the plan isn't for them to play hockey because otherwise which helmet to get would be a no-brainer). Kids much younger than them have free skate routines and compete. Nobody competes (or trains) in a helmet. Ever. Your kids do need to learn how to fall safely, not just rely on helmets and padding.
