I am getting back into ice hockey after a head injury, and I would like to purchase the best helmet I can to protect myself. The highest price doesn't mean the best protection. What brands are the best for safety? What features should I look for? I currently have a basic Bauer, child-size large. (I am petite.)
My recommendation for you would be the Cascade CHX helmet. It is probably the most protective helmet out there with technology specifically designed to prevent concussions and head injuries. It is also pretty easy to find, websites such as hockeymonkey or icewarehouse carry them in stock. You don't win big on style points with this helmet but it does its job. Another alternative is the NikeBauer 8500 helmet, although this helmet probably is not as good as the Cascade in terms of protection. Hope this helps!
Available at inline/ice warehouse.
My son is taking beginner ice hockey lessons and since we don't know much about the sport yet I am not sure I bought him the right size helmet. He is an average size 6 yr old so I bought a Small thinking the Extra Small would be snug or not last very long if it did fit. When we put it on and adjust the straps it fits but has some wiggle room, it doesn't fall down over his eyes or anything. Should it fit very snug? Would it be ok just to buy those foam inserts for helmets to prevent it from moving? Thanks for your answers in advance!
A hockey helmet should fit snugly to prevent any movement and to maximize protection. Make sure the chinstrap can be adjusted so it gently makes contact under the chin when fastened. If your chinstrap is not tight enough your helmet could come off during a collision and you may suffer a concussion. As with all your equipment make sure it is comfortable. Most helmets are adjustable, but the only way to make sure it fits properly is to try it on before buying.
If the helmet that you have bought is a little big, you should be able to adjust the size. You will notice about 4 screws on the helmet for adjustment. I would not use the foam inserts as the helmet was engineered to work without them.
If adjustment will not work and you feel it is not snug enough I would suggest that you get him a smaller size.....they are expensive but there can be no price put on your little boys safety.
Also make sure he wears the chin strap (unless it has a cage or visor, then make sure the cage or visor is securly attached as per the manufactures instructions.

I was just wondering if you could use a roller hockey helmet for ice hockey if your cage is upgraded....im not sure and confused....and if you have one that I can buy for cheap it would be helpfull. I am just starting out as a goal tender and I dont want to spend a ton in case im not good or dont like it....well hope you can help.....
Directly from the USA Hockey In-line rule book.
It is mandatory for all goalkeepers to wear a helmet designed for hockey with the helmet strap properly fastened and full face mask designed for hockey with a chin cup. It is mandatory that all goalkeepers participating in the High School age group division and below, and for goalkeepers under the age of 18 playing in the Adult age division, to wear an H.E.C.C. approved helmet with the helmet strap properly fastened and an H.E.C.C approved full face mask.
sorry for being so anal about the rule but I am an in-line hockey ref, and from personal experience, I have seen to many kids and adults get hurt because of improper equipment....besides if you going to be a goalie, you better have the best equipment . Those pucks hurt!

I play ice hockey about 4 times a week and i've started to get a lot of huge pimples on the top of my forehead almost in my hairline. I'm 13, so it's normal to get pimples but whats a way to stop getting them? Thank You!! :D
Wipe the inside of your helmet with rubbing alcohol after you play. Put acne cream on your zits. You'll probably have to try a couple before you find one that works for you.
hi, i bought a goalie street hockey helmet thinking it was for ice hockey, so im jsut wondering if i could use it for ice hockey or if i need to reture it and buy an ice hockey 1? plz and thank you
Early in my hockey career I tried a street hockey mask for ice hockey (stupid, stupid, stupid me), and the mask cut my forehead on a shot (probably woulda been better off without a mask at that point (that was in the late 1960s).
Took stitches and left a nice scar, not to mention the mental damage that I gained from that hit.
Truly, your head and brain are irreplaceable, and a mask is nothing to go cheap on.
If you buy a mask that is HECC and/or CSA approved, you should be in good shape, but as you get older and the shots become harder, a fiberglass, kevlar, carbon fiber type mask will be necessary.
If price is a concern, you can always go to a helmet/cage combination.
I say, sell the street hockey mask on eBay (if you're not going to use it for street hockey), and price compare goalie masks and other gear at:

It's a good time to buy, as a lot of stores are going thru sales now.

Hockey Bag Black | The Hockey Helmet
Does regular tea(black tea and orange pekoe(sp) leaves) that can be found in say a Lipton tea bag have any sports boosting performance qualities? I've also read that green tea "may" enhance sports performance.
I play ice hockey and have been trying to refine my pregame/skate routine with some sort of "natural" energy. Basically the energy drinks are out of the question, I've tried them and I feel way too twitchy out on the ice.
I've been drinking hot tea for a little while now but I haven't really noticed any benefits from it, other then it's kind of relaxing(which is a good thing). I usually drink a pretty large cup of tea around 2 hours before I skate and have water basically from an hour and a half and a down when I start to play.
