Concussion Prevention in Hockey - Hockey Helmets

Sports Injury Forum -Michael DeFranco MD | Guest Andrew Feldman MD Orthopaedic Surgeon, Sports Medicine Specialist Head Team Physician for the New ...

I just got another concussion from hockey, doctor said if I got one more then im done what helmet should i get?

I just got another concussion from get cheap checked into the boards (in hockey), and the doctor said if I get one more concussion from anything, then I'm done with any sports, so could you guys help me out? Should I get the Cascade m11 or is there a better helmet?

(a) This is a good question for your doctor, honestly.

(b) A helmet won't prevent a concussion, as concussions are caused by the brain moving and hitting the inside of your skull. If you get multiple concussions, you are likely putting yourself in vulnerable/dangerous conditions. If you can play smarter, you will reduce your risk of concussions far more than you will by getting a different helmet.

Best concussion proof hockey helmets?

I'm twelve and I got a concussion. My parents want to get me a better helmet so it doesn't happen again. Any tips/helmet advice on what to do to prevent them?

The Easton S-19, also it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a good mouth guard they can help absorb some of the shock when getting hit and help prevent concussions.

Hockey Helmets and concussions?

last season I sustained 3 grade1 concussions. My helmet has never had any problmes, and has definatly served me well. Over the weekend I suffered a grade 2 concussion also playing hockey.
I'm thinking that now I should get a new helmet. I'm looking at one that is closer to top of the line due my aggrssive natre of play, and bad luck.

Any ideas, or recomendations?

Holy, I would be careful. The more concussions you have the easier it is to get one. They can have life long effects if not ending your life.
When I played I had way too many concussions (both through hockey and football) and it ended my playing period. It became a time where it actually effected everyday of my life.
If you want to continue playing, I would suggest seeing a sports related doctor and look into getting some sort of specialized helmet. I am unsure of the technology in hockey helmets in regards to concussions but I do know there is in football gear.

Best hockey helmet?

, As does the influence of pre-injury characteristics (e.g. gender) and injury details (e.g. magnitude and direction of impact) on long-term outcomes. Competitive sports, such as hockey, allow the rare opportunity to utilize a pre-post design to obtain pre-injury data before concussion occurs on youth characteristics and functioning and to relate this to outcome following injury. Our primary goals are to refine pediatric concussion diagnosis and management based on research evidence that is specific to children and youth. To do this we use new, multi-modal and integrative approaches that will:

Evaluate the immediate effects of head trauma in youth Monitor the resolution of post-concussion...
