What ice hockey helmet is rated highest for safety?

I am getting back into ice hockey after a head injury, and I would like to purchase the best helmet I can to protect myself. The highest price doesn't mean the best protection. What brands are the best for safety? What features should I look for? I currently have a basic Bauer, child-size large. (I am petite.)

My recommendation for you would be the Cascade CHX helmet. It is probably the most protective helmet out there with technology specifically designed to prevent concussions and head injuries. It is also pretty easy to find, websites such as hockeymonkey or icewarehouse carry them in stock. You don't win big on style points with this helmet but it does its job. Another alternative is the NikeBauer 8500 helmet, although this helmet probably is not as good as the Cascade in terms of protection. Hope this helps!

Can you answer these late night ramblings of hockey somewhat or something?

1) If hockey players had their logos on their helmets, like football players…would that be distracting?

2) When you look back on life, would you say that you were raised well?

3) Out of the people that have pucks signed by a NHL player…How many (percentage) would you say throw away that signed puck eventually?

4) What is one thing that is stereotypical of the opposite sex? Be honest…and ignore the thumbs down on this. Mine: Why do men not like making appointment to the doctor?

5) If you have or had children, and they pursued football, would you start to embrace that sport more, so that you can/could support them?

6) When is the last time you have taken a taxi?

7) If you were a scout, would you draft a great player that was cross-eyed?
Happy belated b-day Greg.

Dag Homes, why can't you come up with these gems on nights when I'm home?

1) If hockey players had their logos on their helmets, like football players…would that be distracting?

- Nah, some players are so ugly that even the sun couldn't obscure their mugs.

2) When you look back on life, would you say that you were raised well?

- I think we all have something about our upbringing that we didn't like, but I was loved, provided for, and healthy. Not every child has those provisions.

3) Out of the people that have pucks signed by a NHL player…How many (percentage) would you say throw away that signed puck eventually?

- I'd be surprised if it were greater than 5%.

4) What is one thing that is stereotypical of the opposite sex? Be honest…and ignore the thumbs down on this. Mine: Why do men not like making appointment to the doctor?

- All the women can't take their eyes off of me. And when they know me, well.....did you ever see those movies where the Beatles are chased by women? There you go.

5) If you have or had children, and they pursued football, would you start to embrace that sport more, so that you can/could support them?

- I don't qualify. I would give some push toward sports but I wouldn't obsess about it and MAKE them do something they are only slightly interested in - if at all. Just because I love sports doesn't mean my kid(s) have to like it and I certainly wouldn't try to live my sports fantasies through the activities that my kid(s) could be involved in.

6) When is the last time you have taken a taxi?

- 1983 on a return trip from Cleveland to Philly. Didn't have a ride from the airport, cell phones were owned by rich people, and I wanted to get my butt home yesterday.

7) If you were a scout, would you draft a great player that was cross-eyed?

- Nope, but I'd set him up with a "kegger".

What to get my 49 year old husband for christmas?

He loves to play hockey, he is a construction man and has his own business, he is a property manager for one of our downtown plazas, and he is the captain of the fire department. My children and i have already bought him a Bruins-patterned "Snuggie", 3 books, 2 sweaters and a new hockey helmet. My daughter told me that he got me somthing that rates a "ten" for christmas, and i want to be able to give him something as great as he is giving me. We already have a huge TV, a GPS, but he is not intrested in an iPod. Not does he need anymore tools, we already have a garage full of them.
Thank you and happy holidays! :)

You're asking this on Christmas Eve? That speaks volumes about your marriage!

Good luck getting ANYTHING at this last minute.

What should never be brought into a hockey arena???!!!???

I am stealing this from the 3 20 guy, but flipping it backwards.

What should never be brought to a hockey game:

My List:
1) A purse- It is a freaking game, wear jeans.
2) An over-sized sign - to ruin my view
3) Children with exceptionally high pitched-screams
4) Air horns - self explanatory
5) Flash on the head goal light helmets - I had to sit behind one of these pieces of crap once, and when I was trying to go to bed that night, I could still see the flashing.

Please feel free to disagree. What you think should never be allowing into a hockey arena?
Come on 320....I gave you the mad props.

1.) Large obstructing signs, especially puckbunny ones:
http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/3549/kr 0z95du6.jpg

2.) Babies who cry very loudly, where the parents, not to mention other fans, can't even watch the game.

3.) Bras, that are not being worn. I'm not sure when, but there was an NHL game where someone threw a bra onto the ice...

4.) A Devils Scott Gomez jersey, or be prepared to get beat up

I also disagree with the purse. I usually bring a bag to store my junk in there. Otherwise I look like I'm trying to smuggle something if I put it all in my pockets.

"The White Envelope" Great Story about Xmas Traditions - worth the read.?

SIMPLE WHITE ENVELOPE

It's just a small white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree. No name, no identification, no inscription. It has peeked through the branches of our tree for the past 10 years or so.

It all began because my husband Mike hated Christmas -oh, not the true meaning of Christmas, but the commercial aspects of it -- the overspending, the frantic running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry and the dusting powder for Grandma the gifts given in desperation because you couldn't think of anything else.

Knowing he felt this way, I decided one year to bypass the usual shirts, sweaters, ties, and so forth. I reached for something special just for Mike. The inspiration came in an unusual way. Our son Kevin, who was 12 that year, was wrestling at the junior level at the school he attended. Shortly before Christmas, there was a non-league match against a team sponsored by an inner-city church.

These youngsters, dressed in sneakers so ragged that shoestrings seemed to be the only thing holding them together, presented a sharp contrast to our boys in
their spiffy blue and gold uniforms and sparkling new wrestling shoes.
As the match began, I was alarmed to see that the other team was wrestling without headgear, a kind of light helmet designed to protect a wrestler's ears. It was a luxury the ragtag team obviously could not afford.

Well, we ended up walloping them. We took every weight class. And as each of their boys got up from the mat, he swaggered around in his tatters with false bravado,
a kind of street pride that couldn't acknowledge defeat.

Mike, seated beside me, shook his head sadly, 'I wish just one of them could have won,' he said. 'They have a lot of potential, but losing like this could take the heart right out of them.' Mike loved kids -- all kids - and he knew them, having coached little league football, baseball, and lacrosse. That's when the idea for his present came. That
afternoon, I went to a local sporting goods store and bought an assortment of wrestling headgear and shoes and sent them anonymously to the inner-city church.

On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Mike what I had done and that this was his gift from me. His smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year and in succeeding years. For each Christmas, I followed the tradition
one year sending a group of mentally handicapped youngsters to a hockey game, another year a check to a pair of elderly brothers whose home had burned to the ground the week before Christmas, and on and on. The envelope became the highlight of our Christmas. It was always the last thing opened on Christmas morning, and our children, ignoring their new toys, would stand with wide-eyed anticipation as their dad lifted the envelope from the tree to reveal its contents.

As the children grew, the toys gave way to more practical presents, but the envelope never lost its allure. The story doesn't end there. You see, we lost Mike last year due to cancer. When Christmas rolled around, I was still so wrapped in grief that I barely
got the tree up. But Christmas Eve found me placing an envelope on the tree, and in the morning it was joined by three more. Each of our children, unbeknownst
to the others, had placed an envelope on the tree for their dad.
The tradition has grown and someday will expand even further with our grandchildren standing around the tree with wide-eyed anticipation watching as their fathers take down the envelope. Mike's spirit, like the Christmas spirit, will always be with us. May we all remember Christ, who is the reason for the season, and the true Christmas spirit this year and always.

Thanks for the wonderful story. I've given you a star because I like the story (though I hate it that you replaced Christ with an X), and in hopes that all of my contacts will read the story.

Also, I want to wish you and all of my contacts a very MERRY CHRISTMAS. May God bless you and your families with peace and happiness, and may the true Spirit of Christmas abide in your lives.
